Abel Abilheira writes poetry in Galician and translate it into English. His work explores the inner landscape through the sea of nature and memory, in a constant inner dialogue between wound and beauty.
Abel Abilheira is the literary pseudonym of José Carlos Alonso Ruibal.
Born in Vigo in 1966, he lived in different places in Galicia before embarking on a professional journey that led him to reside in Algeria, Corsica, Luxembourg and, for years, in England. Travel and being away from his homeland have become one of the undercurrents of his writing.
He began publishing on a blog in Galician in 2008 and, since 2019, he has maintained this space, in which he mainly writes poetry in Galician, with forays into Spanish and French, frequently accompanied by translations into English.
His work explores memory, identity, absence and the passage of time through a recurring symbolism in which the sea, landscape and nature dialogue with intimate experience. He writes to give names to emotions and build an inner map made of memories, silences and horizons.
Galician, Spanish and French are the languages in which he finds a more natural expression for his feelings, while the translation into English is born from the desire to open his poetry to new readers.

Abel Abilheira é o pseudónimo literario de José Carlos Alonso Ruibal.
Nado en Vigo en 1966, viviu en diferentes lugares de Galicia antes de emprender un percorrido profesional que o levou a residir en Arxelia, Córsega, Luxemburgo e, desde hai anos, en Inglaterra. As viaxes e o afastamento da terra natal convertéronse nunha das correntes subterráneas da súa escrita.
Comezou a publicar nun blog en galego en 2008 e, desde 2019, mantén este espazo, no que escribe principalmente poesía en galego, con incursións no castelán e no francés, acompañadas con frecuencia por traducións ao inglés.
A súa obra explora a memoria, a identidade, a ausencia e o paso do tempo a través dunha simboloxía recorrente na que o mar, a paisaxe e a natureza dialogan coa experiencia íntima. Escribe para dar nome ás emocións e construír un mapa interior feito de lembranzas, silencios e horizontes.
O galego, o castelán e o francés son as linguas nas que atopa unha expresión máis natural para os sentimentos, mentres que a tradución ao inglés nace do desexo de abrir a súa poesía a novos lectores.
